Questions and Answers About the New 100% Disabled Veteran’s Homestead ExemptionThe Texas Legislature recently passed HB 3613. This bill provides for a 100% exemption for the residence homestead of qualified disabled veterans. The bill also increases the amount of the regular disabled veteran's exemption for veterans who have a disability rating of 30%, 50%, or 70%. Harris County Appraisal District recently sent applications for the new exemption in a letter to all current recipients of the disabled veteran's exemption. Below are some commonly asked questions and answers about the new 100% disability homestead exemption. Q. What are the qualifications for the new exemption? You qualify for the new 100% homestead exemption if you meet these requirements:
To get this exemption, you must fill out and return Form 11.131 Disabled Veteran’s Homestead Exemption Application. You must attach documentation as well. You may attach a copy of your award letter, a “VA tax letter,” or another document from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs showing 100% disability compensation due to a service-connected disability and a rating of 100% disability or of individual unemployability. Q. How do I get documentation of my status from the VA? You can contact the VA at 1-800-827-1000. Their website is at www.va.gov. Latest update from the Texas Veterans Commission and Veterans Administration On April 30th, 2009, we were informed that the offices at 6900 Almeda will no longer be allowing the Duplicate Date Stamping of 21-4138 forms. This is the common place practice allowing us to prevent the loss of Benefits if it appeared that it might take the Veteran or his Family an extended period of time to furnish us with all of the needed documentation and information requested. This could be come a issue if the Contact person for the Veteran does not keep the original document when it is mailed back from the DVA. The Texas Benefits Coalition and it's volunteer staff have always been committed to updates and new information such as this. Latest updates from Pension Maintenance Center in St. Paul The use of a different Medical Form - St Paul has advised us that it will be asking in certain situations that a separate form other than the Standard TVC 15(a or b) may be requested. We are in the process of contacting the various Assisted Living / Nursing communities in which we work with an example of the new form, properly filled out with guidance and answers to questions.
